Introducing a New Guide for California Families Navigating Autism Support and Services

We are excited to announce our new guide, California’s Autism Resources: A Parent’s Guide to Support and Services, is now available from Spectrum Astrolabe. We created this because here in California, we’ve seen a growing number of friends and neighbors receive an autism diagnosis for their child and then feel unsure about what to do next. The days and weeks after a diagnosis can be overwhelming and we wanted to offer a clear and practical resource for families facing these first steps.

This guide is meant especially for those caring for children after a new autism diagnosis, but it can also be useful for grandparents, aunts, uncles, family friends, and anyone else supporting a newly diagnosed young person. California is known for having some of the strongest autism programs and help in the country. Families here benefit from a wide network of options, legal protections, and providers, making it easier to find the right assistance for every individual. From early intervention to community activities and specialized therapies, the options available here are among the best anywhere.

If you are still learning about what autism and neurodiversity mean, it might be a good idea to first check out our other guide about understanding neurodiversity. That introduction can help lay the groundwork before diving into the details of programs and assistance.

Here’s a quick look at what you’ll find inside:

  • Practical steps for connecting with help and resources in California
  • Tips for working with Regional Centers and understanding public programs
  • Information about insurance options and financial assistance
  • Lists of local and statewide organizations and support groups
  • Suggestions for caring for your loved one and yourself along the way

Our hope is that this guide feels like a helping hand and a reassuring voice. You are not alone. There is a whole community ready to support you and those you care about. As always, this is a work in progress and will continue to be updated. Feedback, suggestions, and stories from the community are always welcome. If you have ideas, questions, or experiences to share, please reach out. We would love to hear from you.

You can read the full guide on the Spectrum Astrolabe website. Please share it with anyone who might find it helpful.

Wishing you support and community,
