Hulu has just released a heartfelt documentary called Unleashing Hope which is executive produced by Rosie O’Donnell. The film became available to stream on April 22, 2025, in recognition of Autism Awareness Month. It brings national attention to the incredible ways service dogs can help children on the autism spectrum.
Rosie O’Donnell Shares Her Family’s Story
At the center of the documentary is Rosie O’Donnell’s own experience as a parent. Her youngest child, Clay, was diagnosed with autism at the age of two and identifies as nonbinary. After years of searching for ways to help Clay, Rosie learned about the Guide Dogs of America service dog program. Her introduction to the program came through her friend Lyle Menendez who is involved in training dogs through a prison-based initiative.
When Clay met Kuma, the service dog who would become their constant companion, everything changed. Rosie describes the transformation as life-saving. Clay became calmer, more connected, and began to thrive both at home and at school. Rosie proudly shares that Clay was even named “most improved student” after Kuma joined their family.
The Documentary Explores More Than One Family
Unleashing Hope also follows the journey of another child named Kaleb who is just beginning the process of receiving a service dog. The film gives viewers a rare look at how these dogs are trained. Some of the trainers are incarcerated individuals who participate in a unique program that benefits both the dogs and the people who train them. This approach helps prepare the dogs for their important work while also giving the trainers valuable skills and a sense of purpose.
